- : Turn YOUR brain on buddy. Buying and selling on the net has been going on for
- : years and for the most part it works. Usually you can depend on the other
- : person not to be a total JERK. The kind of response you just made encourages
- : unprincipled idiots like steveng@nwu.edu to rip people off and break down the
- : trust of everyone on the net. I agree with the last guy in this thread that
- : suggested everyone send email to steveng@nwu.edu and demand that he keep his
- : part of the deal. If ew can count on the support of others this system does a
- : darn good job at policing itself.
-
- Right on. I've also been dealing with quite a few people over the Net,
- selling and trading stuff as well as buying stuff. People in general are
- honest, which I really do appreciate. When I am selling something, I
- don't feel it is wrong to request that a money order or personal cheque
- be sent to me first before I send anything out. I consider myself to be
- honest, but I understand that some people may have reservations. I try
- to help them out by giving them my phone number, and also references if
- needed.
-
- I think that sometimes some people panic and jump the gun. If they don't
- receive their package when they expect it, and for some reason they can't
- reach the other party right away, then the other person is branded as a
- thief. Sometimes things just seem to get caught up in the mail.
- Recently a guy in Germany bought some Atari 2600 cartridges from me. I
- shipped them to him around the middle of December, and he just got them
- about two weeks ago. He kept e-mailing me wondering if I had sent them,
- or wondering if I ripped him off. I was getting worried myself when it
- got to be the end of January and he still hadn't received them, and I
- didn't get them returned to me either. But anyway it all worked out.
-
- So dealing in this manner certainly does take trust, but if you're
- fearful of being ripped off (especially when dealing with a large amount of
- money) then take any measures you can to protect yourself.
-
- And good luck...
